Our current energy system is mainly based on the availability of fossil fuels that can be extracted from the ground to a comparably cheap price and that are also excellent energy carriers in terms of storage density and manageability. The on- going transition towards renewable sources is a big challenge for our energy system, mainly due to the highly intermittent character of many renewable energies like wind or solar.
