Kawerau in New Zealand has been home to the largest industrial geothermal direct use operations in the world since the 1950s, utilizing geothermal energy from the Kawerau Geothermal Field (KGF) supplied by Ngati Tuwharetoa Geothermal Assets Ltd. (NTGA) for different industrial processes: pulp and paper, wood products processing, timber drying, clean steam production, among others. This paper provides updates on the current level of geothermal energy direct use, ongoing challenges, and future possibilities for increasing industrial geothermal direct use among process industries in Kawerau and in New Zealand.
