Extensive pilot testing of corrosion mitigation technologies has been performed on geothermal wells producing acid-sulfate brine in Indonesia. This work involved two-phase sampling in the wellbores to determine acid feed zone depths and vertical profiles of brine composition for chemical modeling and corrosion and scaling by chemical mass balance. A full-scale pilot test facility was designed and built to measure corrosion and scaling rates as a function of sodium hydroxide and corrosion inhibitor injection rates downhole and on the surface. A mitigation strategy for severely corrosive acid-sulfate wells has been developed to minimize corrosion and scaling on the surface and subsurface through a balanced application of treatment chemicals.
