摘要

With ever increasing urban sprawl and construction of light industrial parks, it is very likely small manufacturing facilities, office buildings, and even data centers may be serviced by a common utility distribution feeder with adverse effects. Such was the case in the installation of an industrial paper shredder and its impact On an adjacent office park, that lead the utility to impose strict voltage drop criteria during starting of the shredder. The shredder manufacturer quickly ruled-out soft starter or reduced voltage starter, that lead to this investigation. This paper will examine new alternatives to limit the voltage drop on starting including a switched starting capacitor and real time reactive compensation. The advantages and disadvantages of each method will be explored from a technical and practical point of view. Most importantly, it will be shown the cost benefit of these new alternatives is affordable.
