Data center power systems are designed to comply with stringent requirements for power availability and quality. In order to comply with these requirements, multiple power sources are tied together through various arrangements of circuit breakers with automatic transfer schemes. Further, most data center power systems are solidly grounded. Solid grounding provides a low impedance return path for ground fault currents, which creates problems with inter-connected power systems where code mandated ground fault protection is installed. This paper discusses the fundamental design and application principles of ground fault protection for inter-connected power systems. Presently, no industry standard exists to guide the consulting engineers and users who ultimately specify these systems.
