Based upon the 1963-2005 bathymetry data in the Xitaiyangsha area in the mid-southern part of the radiant sand ridges in combination with analysis on tidal, wave characteristics and sediment properties, the paper explores the mechanisms responsible for long-term evolution of the Xitaiyangsha channel-ridge system under tidal dynamics and the accidental occurrences of shoal scouring and pool sedimentation by big waves. The present study conducted physical model experiments that successfully replayed the interactions of wave with tide in the area of the radiant sand ridges and modeled the process of shoal scouring and pool sedimentation by the "Matsa" typhoon. Through seven different-return-period experiments on sediment activities under the co-action of wave and tide, the characteristics and evolution pattern of the shoal scouring and deep-pool sedimentation in different wave conditions are analyzed. It is concluded that the shoal scouring and pool sedimentation occur mainly in waters where ridge and channel distribute alternatively; high-tide big waves and low-tide breaking waves could cause the strongest scouring of the shallow-water bank slopes; the local sediment transport from bank slope to deep pool in a stationary-wave tidal environment constitutes the responding processes of shoal-scouring & pool-sedimentation; with the topographic change, the scouring-sedimentation magnitude by consecutive big waves with different return periods in one experiment is far less than that accumulated by single-big-wave with the same return period experiments.
