Previous studies by the author examined the feasibility of applying channel changing strategies in ad hoc networks, with varying degrees of mobility, as a means to improve total system throughput and individual flow throughput, as well as to reduce network congestion. These studies presented several heuristic methods that allowed a greatly improved performance to be delivered per network flow. This paper expands on that previous work by considering a static initial channel assignment to an ad hoc network. The effects of this initial assignment on the total and per-node throughput are examined for both non-mobile and mobile ad hoc networks. It is shown that performance is improved and in some cases, using a very simple channel assignment strategy can achieve a super-linear performance improvement in a wireless ad hoc network.
