Most traditional file replication methods fail to take into account non-uniform and time-varying file popularity, update rate, and node available capacity, which are vital factors for high efficiency of file replication mechanisms. This paper presents a sagacious file replication mechanism, namely SAGE, that considers these factors to achieve high efficiency in file replication. SAGE makes file replicas in nodes according to node available capacities, and it generates less replicas for frequently-updated or infrequently-visited files to reduce consistency maintenance overhead. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of SAGE in comparison with other schemes. It dramatically reduces the overhead of file replication, improves the efficiency of file replication, and yields significant improvement in reduction of overloaded nodes.
