Impact of Latex Design on Performance of Coating Formulations Containing Narrow Particle Size Distribution Pigments

Narrow Particle Size Distribution (NPSD) pigments offer higher glossing, higher opacity and higher brightness than their traditional counterparts. This is an appealing concept for the coated paper customer as they can use less TiO2, less optical brighteners and less glossing additives for an opportunity to save money. Because of these properties, any North American coated paper mills are either using some level of a NPSD pigment, exploring higher levels, or undertaking strategic decisions for major conversions to NPSD. However, as coated paper makers move in this direction, they will face issues with formulation solids, water holding, machine runnability, coated sheet strength and tentially rint properties. The performance gaps identified in comparing NPSD pigments to traditional coating pigments can be minimized or overcome with the right latex choice. In this paper we will use common ground carbonate to represent a broad distribution pigment and precipatated calcium carbonate to represent a narrow particle size distribution pigment.The impact of latexes with varying levels of surface modification and their impact on paper coating formulations and finished properties are presented.
