In this paper, the electrical resistivity properties of the compacted expansive soils sampled from Hefei of China are measured using the equipment namely ESEU-1 developed at the Institute of Geotechnical Engineering, Southeast University, China. The effects of water content, pore fluid chemistry and temperature on the electrical resistivity of the compacted expansive soils are discussed. The axial swell, axial shrinkage and swelling pressure of the compacted expansive soils are found to have a good relationship with the electrical resistivity of the soils, indicating that the electrical resistivity method can be used as a reasonable method to evaluate the swell-shrinkage properties of expansive soils.
