In this study, the mechanical properties and microstructures of transverse and longitudinal specimens of engineering machinery steel WQ960 after being quenched and tempered at different temperatures have been evaluated. The morphologies of the tensile and impact fractures were observed by using SEM. The equilibrium precipitation of main precipitates as well as solution behaviors of micro-alloying elements in austenite was calculated based on Thermo-Calc thermodynamic software. Quenching temperatures were chosen according to the A_(c3) temperature measured by using a DIL805A dilatometer while tempering temperatures were chosen based on the computed results by Thermo-Calc thermodynamic software. The results showed both the quenching and tempering temperatures have significant influence on the strength and toughness. The optimal heat treatment process parameters for the experimental steel were as follows: soaking at 860°C for 30min, then water quenching and tempering at 590°C for 65min and then air-cooling.
