Urbanization has significantly modified the landscape during the reform periods in China, which has significant climatic implications across all scales due to the simultaneous removal of natural land cover and introduction of urban materials. Change detection from remote sensing data can provide important information to study this change in land cover and land use (LCLU). A study on the LCLU in Quanzhou of China was carried out using remote sensing technology. By using the Landsat data archive, we have created a two epoch time-series for LULC for the period 1989-2000. The map is based on a image supervised-classification approach for monitoring LULC change filtered with a detailed image post-classification. To quantitatively compare LULC of different year, two indexes called Land-Use-Degree Ratio Index (L) and Land-Use Change Ratio Index (R) are created. Results show that the arable land has decreased stupendously and build-up land has increased greatly during the 11 years in Quanzhou city,which stimulated the competition between build-up land and arable land and caused the decrease of arable land in quantity and quality. Comparisons with census data indicate that the great change of LULC is forced by human-induced factors response to specific economics, demographic, or environmental conditions.
