It is twenty seven years since J. Folkman & C. Haudenshild have demonstrated that "capillary tubes" are formed in vitro from the isolated capillary endothelial cells. During these years, a large number of studies have been performed particularly on intrinsic endothelial cell functions required for capillary angiogenesis such as proliferation, migration, adhesion and differentiation, indicating that these functions are regulated through VEGF (vascular eudothelial growth factor), integrins and Rho-mediated actomyosin signaling axis under the interactions with extracellular matrix. In the interactions between endothelial cells and extracellular matrices that are prerequisite for capillary morphogenesis, caveolin-1, the major protein of caveolae plays an essential role for capillary tube formation.
