The project is an arch steel frame with variable cross-sections and curvatures, so the problem of in-plane stability is different to solve. In this paper, calling external executable program SECTIONFILE the cross-section was meshed through self-defined grid; calling external executable program CRSTRESS the residual stress was applied automatically; finally the ultimate bearing capacity of the frame was studied considering geometric imperfect by adopting the ANSYS element Beam189.The load-displacement curves were achieved and the safety performance of the structure was evaluated. Meanwhile, in order to study the applicability of the method,Vogel's gable frame, which was similar to the arch frame was analyzed. The value of the ultimate bearing capacity and the load-displacement curves of the different methods were compared. The differences were small and the method was reliable.
