Hospitals providing inpatient services face increasing challenges to provide quality care, since the available resources are not able to keep up with the rising demand. A study is being conducted at the James A. Haley Veteran's Affairs' Hospital in Tampa, Florida, to explore alternate ways of effectively managing hospital inpatient processes. Patient flow characteristics and interdepartmental dependencies are being studied to improve the system performance. Statistical analysis is being used to improve resource allocation. A simulation model of the system would then be developed to identify bottlenecks, and to evaluate alternate ways for improving the inpatient process.
