Catalytic fast pyrolysis is a promising method to generate upgraded liquids from biomass for the production of drop-in transportation fuels. Vapors from biomass pyrolysis are contacted with catalysts, and the vapors undergo a series of reactions resulting in a more deoxygenated and stable liquid product. Zeolite catalysts and in particular HZSM-5 have been found to be most efficient for deoxygenating pyrolysis vapors. The catalysts will, however, deactivate due to coke formation and composition of the vapors will change as the catalyst becomes deactivated.
