Proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have attracted much interest due to their high energy efficiency. To date, platinum (Pt) and Pt alloys are the most widely used cathode catalysts for ORR. However, Pt and Pt alloys have hampered the commercial applications of PEMFCs due to their high costs and scarcity. Low cost alternative electrochemical catalysts which exhibit high activity and durability for ORR should be developed. Among these, nonprecious metals, especially iron and cobalt, and nitrogen doped carbons have drawn much attention due to their excellent electrochemical activity toward ORR. Meanwhile, the morphologies and porous structures of these nitrogen doped carbons are rarely controllable. In order to introduce porous structure and increase the specific surface area, both of which are believed to promote the mass transport and accessibility of active sites for ORR, zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF), SBA-15 and silica colloid are used as hard template to prepare the ORR catalysts. Nevertheless, their enhancement of porosity and surface area are rather limited.
