Because of the depletion of petroleum resources, development of renewable resources is needed. Among various renewable resources such as sunlight, wind, tidal power, geothermal heat and biomass, microalgal biomass is one of the most promising ones because of the high productivity. While microalgal biomass is mainly composed of sugar, lipid, amino acid and so on, some microalgal species produce pure hydrocarbons very efficiently. For example, botryococcus braunii produces botryococcene, whose structure has many branches, and Aurantiochytrium 18W-13a sp. produces squalene (2,6,10,15,19,23-Hexamethyltetracosa-2,6,10,14,18,22- hexaen, Figure 1).
