Interaction between H and lattice defects underlies diverse materials phenomena1, including H storage, H embrittlement, metallic H membranes, nuclear fusion reactors, etc. Crucial to all these problems is trapping of H at the lattice defects, such as vacancies, voids, dislocations, grain boundaries and cracks. To date, H trapping at vacancies has attracted the most attention because it holds many surprises and mysteries.
