Chemical EOR generally involves flooding a reservoir with an alkaline-surfactant-polymer combination, a surfactant-polymer mix, or a polymer-only injection. Polymers can change the viscosity of injected water at relatively low concentrations such as 250 to 1,500 ppm. Surfactants can reduce IFT between oil and brine in the reservoir where most unrecovered oil is trapped by the capillary force in the porous formation. Alkalis can reduce adsorption of the surfactants on the rock surface and react with the organic acid, e.g. naphthenic acids contained the crude oils to generate additional insitu surface active agents and help reduce the IFT further.
