Hyperbranched polymers are attractive candidates for applications requiring materials with high functional density and molecular flexibility. In contrast to dendrimers, hyperbranched polymers can be prepared in a single step from ABx-type monomers (x>2), making them well-suited for large scale production. The highly branched structure reduces chain entanglements and lowers solution viscosities compared with linear analogues, which also makes hyperbranched polymers favorable building blocks for thin film and membrane technologies. Additionally, extensive branching is favorable for applications requiring high functional density.
