1 INTRODUCTIONIn considering challenges and opportunities, one is faced with an increasing number of contradictions that the evolution of our society and technology bring. The balance between simple sustainable living in a more complex world;the need to design using whole life environmental, social as well as economic factors. These are just two examples demonstrating how the tactics of detail have to be set within a strategy based on holistic context. Table 1 lists some contradictions that arise for a few facts and consequences which lead to questions;there are countless others.
