In 2005, China’s energy consumption amounted to 2233 million tons coal equivalent (MtCE), and the CO2 emission was 5322.69 million tons, making China the world’s second largest consumer of energy products and source of CO2 emissions behind only the United States. This paper analyses the change of energy consumption and aggregated CO2 emission in China from 1980 to 2005 based on a complete decomposition method. During this period, the energy saving rate was 33.35%, and the decarbonization rate for the period was 16.06%. The study indicates that China has achieved a considerable decrease in its energy consumption and CO2 emissions mainly due to the improvement of energy efficiency.
