Rapid Prototyping and Validation of an Autogyro Simulation Model

This paper describes the initial development and validation of a flight simulation model of a Rotorsport UK Ltd. MT-03 autogyro. The model features rigid blades with a teetering rotor joint, which has wake interference effects modelled on the vertical surfaces of the vehicle. The initial model has been tuned to give a reasonable match of trim attitude and dynamic responses in each axis when compared with flight test data obtained from a brief campaign conducted specifically for this purpose. Rotor head mast angles are not particularly well predicted by the model but it is postulated, and some evidence provided, that inclusion of main rotor interference effects on the fuselage model would improve the fit, particularly for the mast roll angle. It was found that changing the main rotor inflow model from (Peters/He) three- to six-state improved the fidelity of the model’s main rotor speed and teeter angle at very low speeds. Continuing developments with the model and its validation are discussed.
