The effect of calcium on tomato seedlings under subhigh temperature was researched by treating with CaCI2, Ca2+ chelator EGTA, and Ca2+ channel inhibitor LaClj on tomato seedling. The results showed that: CaCl2 promoted plant growth under high temperature stress, but LaCl3 and EGTA, especially the first, aggravated the effect of sub-high temperature. CaCl2 increased the content of various fraction of calcium, but EGTA and LaClj decreased soluble calcium content and increased sightly soluble and insoluble calcium fractions in varying degrees. CaCl2 treatment increased the content of chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and soluble sugar, accelerated the activities of SOD, POD and CAT, decreased MDA content under sub-high temperature, while EGTA and LaClj treatments had the opposite effect to some extent. These results are further proved that calcium has mainly function as a second messenger on regulating tomato plants under sub-high temperature stress.
