Presence of arsenic (As) in groundwater used for drinking water production is a global problem affecting countries on all five continents. Several treatment technologies have been adopted for removal of As from drinking water. Taking into account removal efficiency and effect on the environment, the most promising treatment method at present is adsorption on commercial granular adsorptive media, in particular iron-oxides based ones (AWWARF & USEPA, 2005; Petrusevski et al., 2007a). These As adsorbents are, however, expensive and fairly selective, i.e. they have significantly lower adsorption capacity at higher pH, and for arsenite, As(Ⅲ), which is commonly present in anoxic groundwater. Furthermore, commercial adsorbents cannot be regenerated, but need to be replaced once exhausted, which results in both, high operational costs and significant waste generation.
