Entrained-flow gasifiers are the most widely used industrial reactors to gasify coal commercially. Entrained-flow gasifiers inject pulverized coal particles and reach high local gas temperatures (up to 2500 °C) at elevated pressures (4-65 atm) to ensure high carbon conversion in the time frame of a few seconds. Measuring the rates at which char gasifies is of interest since char conversion is the rate- controlling step in a gasifier. Most reported gasification rates have been measured in thermogravimetric analyzers (TGAs), with relatively few coal char gasification studies at high temperatures in entrained flow systems.
