This paper presents the applications and performance scores of WindTrends in Europe. This data set has been developed for wind energy uses and improves the previous global reanalysis series, due to its higher resolution in both time and space, and the higher detail of input data. At Meteosim Truewind SL, MASS model simulations have been validated and applied to wind resource studies all over Europe. The main atmospheric variable treated in this work is wind speed, as extracted from model output, at different heights over MASS grid points. It was precisely the original purpose of this project. Wind series from simulations, in the original hourly sampling as well as daily, monthly or yearly averages, are then compared to measurements in order to obtain wind anomalies within the period [1997-2008]. The paper mainly discusses the role of these data in the MCP methodology for the wind energy sector, and eventually shows the main results of validation. In this concern, self-consistency tests and comparison to observational data prove WindTrends a reliable reanalysis source.
