In this paper, the concept and implementation of vector control (VC) strategies of a brushless doubly-fed reluctance generator (BDFRG) for applications which include high performance drives and variable-speed generators are presented. A potential universal algorithm for independent active and reactive power control of doubly-fed machines is proposed. The method is inspired from the very unusual operation that takes place at the heart of the BDFRM, the machines dynamics and features an important asset compared to other model based approaches involving machine parameters or position encoder. The approach described merely relies on current and voltage measurements of the power side only. Evidence of the good performance is shown through simulations. This new approach will be helpful to future studies of the machine in the light of its application in wind power generation or large pump systems.
