A novel design approach for multi-bit reconfigurable transmitarrays is proposed. A 90° spatial phase shifter is designed using a double-layer slotted H-shaped patch element with two PIN diodes. By spatially cascading it with a T-bit reconfigurable transmitarray element, a 2-bit phase resolution is obtained. The simulated results of a Ku-band 2-bit element show that four well distributed phase states are achieved, and the average element insertion loss is 1.4 dB at 12.5 GHz. The proposed design approach is considerably easier to implement compared to conventional 2-bit transmitarray designs, and can be extended to 3-bit and multi-bit designs by further cascading a 45° phase shifter and so on.
