Fatigue Evaluation Approach for Ocean Transport of Onshore Modules

Fatigue design for offshore modularized facilities is an established part of the design process. Such facilities are subjected to cyclic fatigue loading during initial transport as well as during the facility's operating life after installation. Fatigue design for onshore modularization is different in that fatigue loading primarily applies only during ocean transport to the jobsite. This and other differences lead to the need for a different approach in dealing with fatigue. This study expands on the simplified fatigue analysis approach and how it can be specifically applied for the structural design of onshore modules. An implementation procedure and an example calculation are described to indicate how published guidelines can be applied. The results of the analysis can be used to validate whether a module's structural design is adequate, whether design changes need to be made, or whether a more comprehensive fatigue analysis might be warranted.
