Nonlinear Seismic Response of Structural System with Gravity Bias

Gravity forces could lead to unsymmetrical lateral resistance capacity in a building structure. This phenomenon, called "gravity bias", could result in detrimental behavior in structure's seismic response. In order to investigate this issue, a series of nonlinear time history analyses were conducted for representative single degree of freedom structures with variation of several parameters. The analyses results showed that both maximum relative displacement and ductility demand of a structure increases due to gravity bias. The influences of structural period of vibration, hysteretic characteristics, and site class on the gravity bias effect were also investigated. Based on this study, it is suggested that a smaller response reduction factor should be chosen for design when gravity bias exists.
