摘要

Universities are playing an ever-greater role in assisting research and development in industry. This is often at a global level, both in the nature of the industries involved and in the many nationalities of students and academic staff involved. Increasing it is accepted that students, both at an undergraduate and postgraduate level will take part in projects or research that are industry related. It is also recognised that universities, with their particular expertise and knowledge will help many Small and Medium-sized companies (SMEs) to both start up and to develop. This paper considers some experiences with undergraduate and postgraduate students in the School of Computing and Engineering at the University of Huddersfield, UK, showing how collaboration with industry can be to the advantage of both sides, giving the students a more practical and realitybased education as well as finding solutions to problems faced by companies. Some consideration is given to research on the growth of SMEs in the UK and the possibility that universities can be effective facilitators in their development.
