Traditionally the welfare and health of dairy cows hasbeen monitored through observation by stockpersons andveterinarians.Cattle welfare can be assessed using diffe-rent parameters and a combination of methods.For theassessment of welfare,and to accommodate the informa-tion requirements of consumers.different systems havebeen developed [1].The Bristol Welfare Assurance Pro-gramme and Welfare Quality(R)Project for assessment ofthe welfare status of animals use mainly animal-basedmeasures,which give more appropriate results of an exis-ting welfare situation.Environment-based parameters areused for the identification of possible improvements toanimal welfare.
