A mill that has a total nitrogen number permit limit may have a large margin of safety, since a large portion of the organic nitrogen, on the order of 40 to 60%, could be considered recalcitrant. Care should be taken when performing these analyses, since minute deviations in the accuracy of analytical results can result in large deviations in results. While more difficult to perform than a standard 5-day BOD test, a properly run time series BOD test can provide a wealth of information on your effluents.
