Summary: Systemic bacterial infections are an important cause of mortality and morbidity in children. Most of the times, there is only one causing agent, but, in rare cases, the etiology is polymicrobial. In this situation, establishing the diagnosis is difficult and most of the times it cannot be done through usual means. In this article, we present the case of a 6 years old male patient admitted in the Intensive Care Unit of The National Institute of Infectious Diseases "Prof. Dr. Matei Bals" with the diagnosis of acute meningoencephalitis. We have monitored the correlation of the etiological diagnosis obtained through classic laboratory methods with the diagnosis established through modern molecular methods, as well as the clinical and paraclinical evolution of the patient under treatment. With the aid of the molecular methods of diagnosis, we have identified two microorganisms: Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Acinetobacter baumannii. Subsequently, the polymicrobial etiology was confirmed through blood cultures. Although coinfection with two microorganisms is rare in an immunocompetent patient, the diagnosis was possible with the help of extremely fast molecular methods, which have allowed the identification of both agents and led to an adequate early treatment.
