In Nigeria, most soils used for growing crops are light soils ranging from sandy loam to sandy clay. The inadequate availability of nutrients in these soils for crops use enhance growth and yields has made farmers keep demanding for inputs especially NPKfertilizer to improve soil fertility. Unfortunately, the price of this NPK fertilizer is in many cases beyond the reach of peasant farmers who are the majority in providing food for the nation. The use of organic materials as alternatives in providing adequate nutrients to the soil is gaining ground among researchers and farmers. Since there are many organic materials available in abundance that can be used to enhance fertility of the soils, a preliminary investigation of the reaction of maize (zee maize) planted in a sandy loam soil incorporated with organic (Cow dung) and inorganic (NPK) materials was carried out in Adamawa State of Nigeria, after subjecting the soil to different tractor traffic. The treatment involved were the incorporation of organic materials (cow dung) in 12 plots of 3m by 3m and inorganic materials (NPK) in 12 plots of 3m by 3m. The plots were subjected to 0,5,10, and 15 passes of MF 180 tractor with tyre inflation pressure of 31kpa before planting in a complete randomized block experiment. Each pass was a tro and fro movement of the tractor along the same path. The crop (maize) was planted to depth of 5cms at 30cms interval. The organic and inorganic materials were applied to the plots at the rate of 120Kg/ha which is the basal application of fertilizer of maize crop. Soil and plant parameters measured include: penetration resistance, bulk density after load applications, plantheights and stem diameter of the crop every 7 days after emergence till time of harvest, and yield (103 days after planting).Results indicated that the crop diameter after emergence was 0.2505m at the time of harvest. The yield of the crop in plots with cow dung ranged from 1.9tons/ha to 2.9tons/ha while that from plots incorporated with NPK fertilizer ranged from 3.4tons/ha to 4.02tons/ha. Generally for this experiment, it was observed that the cow dung did not perform better than NPK fertilizer in improving the yield of maize planted in sandy loam soil after different tractor traffic. The influence of other organic materials readily available to farmers on the yield of jnaize after tractor traffic need be investigated. This will lead to proper recommendation to farmers on what management practices to adopt for improved crop production.
