摘要

There are a vast number of nutraceuticals utilized by clients for their dogs and cats, which is increasing in veterinary medicine, however there is a paucity of information regarding their bioavailability, and there is even less information regardingtheir activities in canine and feline cancer cells; the disease where these supplements are often implemented. Though these molecules may show promising for prevention or even treatment in rodent models and in-vitro systems, there is a tremendous amountof work to be done to verify their pharmacokinetics, metabolism and activity in canine and feline systems. The major nutraceuticals that are derived from functional foods where there is some examination of bioavailability in dogs and or cats include theflavonoids from green tea extract, soybeans and grape skins; as well as the carotenoid lycopene found in many red fruits and vegetables. These stand as examples of where we are at in our understanding of these molecules in veterinary medicine.
