Cutaneous markers of internal diseases are common and are often highly indicative for a specific systemic disease; therefore the recognition of the significance of these markers will facilitate diagnosis of the underlying disease processes. The cutaneous symptoms may be the result of the same etiologic agent or pathogenic process as the internal disease—as occurs in some bacterial, protozoal, fungal, immune-mediated and neoplastic disorders, or may be the result of hormones affecting the skin, or may be due to genetic links or other factors.
