Vascular anomalies are rare congenital malformations of the arterial, venous, and lymphatic systems in humans. Most are present in utero or at the time of birth. Most will progress and cause significant problems for patients. Only the benign hemangioma of infancy regresses on its own without treatment. Roughly 4.5% of the pediatric population under the age of 7 is affected by vascular anomalies. The majority of these anomalies are benign; however, they can have very malignant sequelae. Daily activities of life are severely restricted when pain, swelling, or bleeding occurs. Not much is known about the genetics of the malformations; however, biologic markers associated with the anomalies have been discovered. A better understanding of these conditions has helped to further classify the anomalies beyond tumors and malformations. Many of which are associated with syndromes. The International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies (ISSVA) was founded in 1992 to research, define, and recommend treatments for them. Imaging is crucial in the diagnosis and treatment. Prior to endovascular techniques, surgery was the only option for attempted resection and control. However, surgery has less than favorable outcomes if the entire anomaly cannot be resected. A few multi-specialty clinics and treatment centers have arisen to manage such cases. These teams consist of plastic surgeons, vascular surgeons, and interventional radiologists to name a few. A thorough understanding of the imaging, anatomy, and potential complications of surgery or intervention is crucial to the success of managing the vascular anomalies.
