Although radiation therapy is very effective for many tumour types it is of very limited availability; licensing of premises and personnel mean that the logistics of all forms of radiation are demanding.The best candidates for treatment include:1. Tumours that are confined within a limited anatomic site and which are locally invasive2. Tumours that cannot be completely removed by surgical excision because this might result in an unacceptable functional or cosmetic defect,3. Tumours that have recurred after a previous surgical attempt bare also reasonable prospects for radiation therapy.Where tumours have been subjected to previous ineffective treatment there is a significant reduction in the effects of radiation, and therefore the prognosis; the more times a tumour has been treated (whether by surgery or other means) the more difficultthe tumour will be to control. Radiation should not be thought of as a "last resort" to be used when all other options have failed. It is far better applied at the outset. However availability and compliance issues (client and patient) have to be considered at the outset of discussion.
