摘要

Paraneoplastic syndromes are abnormalities/clinical signs that are caused by the presence of malignancies. A simple classification system that can be used to explain the etiology of these abnormalities is as follows:1) Signs due to substances produced by the cancer and released into systemic circulation. Examples include hormones, proteins, cytokines, electrolytes, metabolites, etc.2) Signs due to the consumption/loss of nutrients by the tumor. Examples include hypoglycemia, hypoalbuminemia, etc.3) Signs due to the body's response to the tumor. Examples include immune-mediated diseases, leukocytosis, erythrocytosis, anemia, cachexia, coagulopathies, etcWhile the true incidence of these syndromes is unknown in veterinary patients they are likely quite common in tumor bearing patients. A clear understanding of the pathogenesis of these syndromes is valuable in devising effective treatment plans. Further, their presence can be used as early indicators of disease or disease recurrence.
