In order to accommodate a hoist operator with a non-work related disability, a research team at the Reiche Zeche research mine at Technische Universitat Bergakademie Freiberg (TUBAF) designed a foot-operated hoist brake control in addition to hand-operated controls. Miners and visitors use the hoist on a daily basis, and any malfunction in the brakes can negatively impact their health and safety. Therefore, the brake control system must have high reliability and accuracy. The team designed and analyzed different lever systems and investigated factors such as starting position, angular displacement, mechanical advantage and forces required for operation. The final design chosen was a complex lever system with optimized linkage found through, modelling, numerical analysis and physical testing.
