In 2009 the KNRM (Royal Netherlands Sea Rescue Institution) started the development of the next generation lifeboat. At the moment the KNRM operates 10 vessels of the Arie Visser Class, RIB-type vessels of 19 meter length. These vessels proved to be very reliable and capable rescue boats. However, the Technical University of Delft developed a revolutionary new hull shape, the Sea-Axe, which improves a great deal the seakeeping and the safety of the crew, as well as the performance of the vessel. Damen Shipyards adopted this new hull shape to implement it in the design of the SAR 1906 and to compare it together with the Arie Visser class for seakeeping, resistance, maneuverability and course stability. This paper will focus on the benefits of the innovations implemented in the SAR 1906 in comparison to the Arie Visser Class.
