The Imaging X-ray Polarimctry Explorer (IXPE) will add linear polarization (degree and angle) to the usual features (time, energy, and position) typical of an x-ray astronomy mission. It will expand the available information. IXPE is a NASA Astrophysics Small Explorer (SMEX) mission with a large contribution by ASI which will be launched into an equatorial orbit in 2021. While several non-useful upper limits are available back from the '70 the two order of magnitude improvement of IXPE mission will provide meaningful observations among few dozen sources in the 2-8 keV band. Thanks to its imaging capabilities, it will be possible to produce for the first time polarization maps of several X-ray-bright extended sources. Thanks to its sensitivity, also phase-resolved polarimctry of many bright pulsating x-ray sources will be available.
