An Innovative Ventilation Monitoring System at a Pig Experimental Building

Ventilation rate is one of the key variables to quantify aerial emissions from animal feeding operations but is technically challenging to measure.This research aimed at developing a new system to reliably and continuously monitor ventilation rate at a state-of-the-science pig environmental building, which consists of 12 rooms of 11.0 × 6.1 × 2.7 m (L × W × H) each and with a 1.8-m deep manure pit under slatted floor.Each room has a capacity of 60 finishing pigs and is equipped with four ventilation fans.The two pit fans are variable-speed 25-cm diameter tube-mounting fans.The two wall-fans, one of 36-cm diameter and another of 51-cm diameter,are single-speed fans at the room end wall.A Pit Exhaust Airflow Measurement Assembly(PEAMA) using an impeller anemometer to measure ventilation rate was developed and installed in each pit fan.The PEAMA was calibrated in a laboratory.Twenty-four PEAMAs provide continuous and real-time ventilation outputs in m3 min-1 to an on-site computer system(OSCS) in the building.Wall fan operations are monitored using unregulated AC to DC power supply adapters, which provide fan on-off signals as well as fan power voltages to the OSCS.Room static pressures are measured with pressure transducers.A Wall Fan Tester was developed to test the wall fans and obtain fan airflow-pressure models.Wall fan ventilation rates are indirectly obtained during post-measurement data processing using the monitoring data and fan models.The performance results demonstrated that this innovative system improves reliability and accuracies of aerial emission monitoring.
