We have measured plutonium abundance in soils from sitesin the UK including samples on site at the former fastreactor site at Dounreay, off-site nearby and elsewhere inthe UK. All assessments are consistent with estimates ofthe average abundance in soils arising from the fallout ofweapons tests, severe accidents and natural processesstimulated in natural ores.We also observe much lower measurements forplutonium abundance (~(239)Pu) via the AMS technique thanfor the BEGe method: preliminary analysis indicates thatcontamination of the γ-ray line(s) used in the BEGe analysisis a likely cause for the over-estimation in the γ-rayassessments. The levels estimated via the AMS techniqueare consistent with earlier reports in the literature associatedwith long-term studies of legacy nuclear sites , uraniumore deposits and slightly exceed those inferred from~(240)Pu/~(239)Pu ratios from lake sediments .
