Performance Results of the Achates Power Light-Duty and Heavy-Duty Opposed Piston Engines

This paper will cover initial results from two ongoing projects at Achates Power. The first is a 2.7L three-cylinder enginedeveloped for a light-duty pick-up truck running with gasoline in compression ignition. This project shows the capability of this engineto achieve a 24.4% improvement in fuel consumption compared to a four-stroke direct injection turbocharger spark ignition engine. Thesecond engine is a 10.6L three-cylinder engine developed for Class 8 heavy-duty line haul tractors. This project is in the early stages ofdevelopment and shows great potential with a demonstrated a 13-mode SET cycle average BSFC of 186.3 g/kWh. In addition, thisproject aims at delivering a 90% NOX reduction over the 2017 standards. Early work on the exhaust temperature and engine our emissionsmanagement confirms this potential.
