The Impacts of Parents’ Migration on Study Achievements of Chinese Rural Left-behind Children

Based on the data from China Education Panel Survey (CEPS) conducted by National Survey Research Center at Renmin University of China, this paper applied matching estimator, mainly analyzing the impacts of parents’ migration on study achievements of their left-behind children. It was found, in general, that there are no significant differences of study achievements between left-behind children and non-left-behind children. Only in the pattern of mother migrated while father did not can migration has a significant negative influence on study achievements of left-behind children. Therefore we should pay more attention to the mental effects that left-behind experiences have on children, and the long term policy orientation should not only include making children enroll near the work place of their parents through the reform of household registration , but also strengthening the construction of the new socialist countryside .
