The paper describes a sustainable cold chain development with emphasis on carbon emission reduction and affordabilityin the context of scalable solutions. While food loss and CO_2 emission can be minimized by introducing more transportand storage cooling then an increase in food retail and household cooling causes a high increase in electricityconsumption. Integrating vapor compression intelligently in the food retail sector reduces carbon emission up to 180%and reduces the operating cost by up to 75%.The solutions are a combination of using renewable electricity, storing energy and utilizing the full potential of thethermal processes by heat recovery, thermal storage and export of thermal energy. The conclusion is that it is necessary to develop vapor compression to become an integrated part of the total energysystem. It can be done by using the best available technologies and at the same time it is possible to make it economicallyviable.
